I'm all for having interns writing the news.. if they are real journalists and not corporate puppets like so many of our journalists today. Journalism needs fresh blood and a resurgence of ideals. I want people who will push issues and make things get done because they keep writing about it make the readers aware!

With all due respect to the, er, experienced journalists out there, both properly trained interns and poorly paid green reporters are very needed for a variety of reasons: 1.) less jaded perspective 2.)cheaper...not fair, but a fact of life 3.) more computer savvy, in general. All of these attributes are critical, especially in this time of transition in publishing. Journalistic integrity is something that the editors that hire and nurture them are responsible for, both in hiring the right people and in leading by example (imho as a layman, of course). Both the credit and the blame belong to them. I take credit for the cliche.

The bottom line is that newspapers are going under, and as a result the quality continues to deteriorate as experienced reporters and offered buyouts or laid off to make room for people who will work for peanuts. Soon all the reporting will be done by people in India, and when they're too expensive, it will be people in Vietnam.
