The buying while depressed thing is well-known method of getting a momentary endorphin rush; the self-centered is more complex, it seems. Those who are really self-involved, I've noticed, just don't give a crap about the cost of buying more or for a higher price because it is not a truly involved decision.
If anything explains my mother's shopping habits... I wonder if they looked at the shopping habits of these people before AND after the videos. If anything, people are more inclined to give into impulses when they're emotionally vulnerable, but I doubt they're going to stray too far away from their normal inclinations.
